Vocabulary

Key terms you'll master

Marketplace
An online platform where many independent sellers list products and the platform brings buyers, handles payments and often supports delivery and returns.
D2C (direct-to-consumer)
Selling directly to customers through your own website or app instead of through a marketplace or retailer.
Quick commerce
Apps such as Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart that deliver essentials quickly from nearby dark stores. Brands usually supply stock through a vendor onboarding process.
GSTIN
The Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. It is generally needed to sell most goods on Indian marketplaces; exceptions and schemes exist, so confirm with a CA.
TCS (Tax Collected at Source)
An amount e-commerce operators collect on sellers' sales and report to the tax authorities. Sellers can usually claim credit for it when filing GST returns.
Brand registry
A marketplace programme, such as Amazon Brand Registry, that gives trademark owners more control over their listings, access to enhanced content and tools to protect their brand.
Listing
A product's page on a marketplace, including title, images, bullet points, description, price, variations and reviews.
Title formula
A structure for product titles: Brand + Product type + Key attributes such as material, size, colour and quantity.
Bullet points
Short key-feature lines near the top of a listing. The best ones start with a benefit and back it with a feature or fact.
Sponsored Products
Amazon's pay-per-click ads that promote individual product listings in search results and on product pages.
Auto campaign
A campaign where the platform chooses which searches and products to show your ad for, based on your listing. Useful for discovering search terms.
Manual campaign
A campaign where you choose the keywords or products to target and set bids yourself, giving more control.
Incentivised review
A review given in exchange for a reward such as cashback, a discount or a free product. It violates marketplace policies and goes against consumer rules on genuine reviews.
Amazon Vine
An official Amazon programme where selected reviewers receive products to post honest reviews. Eligibility and costs change, so check current terms.
Account health
A marketplace dashboard showing seller performance on things like order defects, cancellations, late dispatch and policy compliance.
