Vocabulary
Key terms you'll master
- Influencer (creator) marketing
- Partnering with people who have an engaged online audience so they present your brand to that audience in their own voice.
- Nano and micro creators
- Smaller creators (roughly 1,000 to 100,000 followers) with niche, often highly engaged audiences. Usually the most cost-effective starting point for small brands.
- Engagement rate
- A rough measure of how actively an audience responds, often (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100. Comment quality matters as much as the number.
- Affiliate marketing
- A performance-based model where a brand pays partners a commission when their audience completes an agreed action such as a sale or lead.
- Affiliate / publisher
- The person or website that promotes a brand's products using tracking links or codes and earns commission on results.
- Tracking link
- A unique URL given to each affiliate so the system can record clicks and credit sales to the right partner.
- Marketplace
- A platform like Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho where many sellers list products and the platform brings traffic, in exchange for fees and commissions.
- D2C (direct-to-consumer) store
- A brand's own online store, for example on Shopify or WooCommerce, selling directly to customers without a marketplace in between.
- ONDC
- Open Network for Digital Commerce, a government-backed open network that aims to make sellers discoverable across many buyer apps.
- Online reputation management (ORM)
- Tracking, protecting and improving how a business is perceived online through monitoring, responding, fixing problems and highlighting genuine positives.
- Brand mention
- Any time a business, product or founder is named online, such as in a review, comment, post, video or article.
- Social listening
- Monitoring social media and the web for mentions and sentiment about a brand, competitors or topics, manually or with tools.
- Marketing automation
- Using software to perform repeatable marketing tasks, such as sending follow-ups or updating records, automatically based on rules.
- CRM (customer relationship management)
- A system that stores and tracks leads and customers, their interactions and their stage in the sales pipeline.
- Lead scoring
- Giving leads points based on their actions and details to estimate how likely they are to buy, so the team can prioritise follow-up.
