Google may rewrite titles and descriptions, and the visible length depends on the device and the searcher's screen. Treat the pixel figures as a guide, not an exact rule.

Why titles and descriptions matter

The title tag is usually the blue headline people see in search results and one of the clearest signals of what a page is about. The meta description does not directly change rankings, but it is often used as the snippet under the title, so a clear one can earn more clicks from the same position.

How to write a good title

  • Lead with the main topic or keyword people actually search for, in natural words.
  • Make every page's title unique, and match it to the page's H1 and content.
  • Add your brand at the end if there is room, separated by a pipe or dash.
  • Avoid stuffing several keyword variations into one title.

How to write a good meta description

  • Summarise what the page offers in one or two plain sentences.
  • Include a concrete detail such as a price range, location or what is included.
  • End with a reason to click, for example "See timings and fees".

Frequently asked questions

How long should an SEO title be?

Google does not publish a fixed character limit; titles are cut off by display width, which on desktop is roughly 600 pixels. In practice, about 50–60 characters usually fits. Put the most important words first so they still show if the title is shortened.

How long should a meta description be?

There is no official limit, and Google trims snippets to fit the device. Around 120–155 characters is a common, safe range for a clear summary. Write it to make people want to click, not to stuff keywords.

Why does Google show a different title or description from mine?

Google may rewrite titles and generate snippets from page content when it thinks another text better matches the search. Clear, accurate titles that match the page's main heading and content are rewritten less often.

Is the pixel width exact?

No. The tool estimates width from typical Arial character widths at the sizes Google commonly uses. Actual display depends on the device, browser and Google's layout, so use it as a guide.
