Vocabulary

Key terms you'll master

Visual hierarchy
The order in which the eye reads elements in a design. The most important message should be the most prominent.
Contrast
The difference between elements, such as light versus dark or big versus small. It creates emphasis and makes text readable.
Alignment
Lining up elements along shared invisible lines so a design looks organised and easy to scan.
Template
A pre-designed layout in Canva that you edit with your own text, photos and colours.
Elements
Canva's library of shapes, icons, illustrations, frames, stickers and other graphics you can add to a design.
Brand Kit
A Canva feature for storing a brand's logos, colours and fonts in one place. A full brand kit is a paid-plan feature.
Creative
The visual and text people see in a post or ad, including the image or video, overlay text, headline and CTA.
Aspect ratio
The proportion of width to height of an image or video, such as 1:1 (square) or 9:16 (vertical full screen).
Safe zone
The central area of a vertical Reel or Story that is not covered by app elements like captions, profile names and buttons.
Vertical video (9:16)
Video shot in portrait orientation to fill a phone screen, the standard shape for Reels, Shorts and Stories.
Hook
The opening seconds of a video designed to make viewers keep watching, such as showing the result first or stating a clear benefit.
B-roll
Supporting footage, like product close-ups or hands at work, shown over or between the main shot to add interest.
Thumbnail
The preview image shown for a video before someone clicks. On YouTube it is landscape (16:9).
Focal point
The single main thing a viewer notices first in a design, such as a face or product.
Clickbait
A title or thumbnail that promises something the content does not deliver, which damages trust and can break platform policies.
